fabric of memories

Studio practice 2008 - 2019

The process is important – these are not machine made cloths.

The images hand printed on these cloths are a response to the memories of landscapes, landforms, and the elements that create them.
The shapes and colours remind me of river stones, boulders, shadows of pandanus palms or spines of wildlife and road kill.
From the grand horizons and awe inspiring rock formations to intimate details of a mark in the sand or a fragment of bark.
The pieces in this suite could come form any time or any place

The base fabric is hand loomed hemp woven by women in the north of Thailand.
The fabric is around 30-34cm wide which is the width of the looms – determined by the width of the weavers’ shoulders. Each weaver creates a unique texture.
